An “outstanding” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) blistering thriller featuring a brilliant and unorthodox Army investigator, his enigmatic female partner, and their hunt for the Army’s most notorious—and dangerous—deserter from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille and Alex DeMille.

When Captain Kyle Mercer of the Army’s elite Delta Force disappeared from his post in Afghanistan, a video released by his Taliban captors made international headlines. But circumstances were murky: Did Mercer desert before he was captured? Then a second video sent to Mercer’s Army commanders leaves no doubt: the trained assassin and keeper of classified Army intelligence has willfully disappeared.

When Mercer is spotted a year later in Caracas, Venezuela, by an old Army buddy, top military brass task Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor of the Criminal Investigation Division to fly to Venezuela and bring Mercer back to America—preferably alive. Brodie knows this is a difficult mission, made more difficult by his new partner’s inexperience, by their undeniable chemistry, and by Brodie’s suspicion that Maggie Taylor is reporting to the CIA.

With ripped-from-the-headlines appeal, an exotic and dangerous locale, and the hairpin twists and inimitable humor that are signature DeMille, The Deserter is the first in a timely and thrilling new series from an unbeatable team of True Masters: the #1 New York Times bestseller Nelson DeMille and his son, award-winning screenwriter Alex DeMille.

  • The Deserter

Poorly written, painfully shallow characters. Sophomoric, annoying and repetitive references to the main character’s horniness makes it sound as if a 14 year-old male helped write it. Too many coincidences that worked in favor of the two main characters and frankly, too many holes in the plot.

    Great Story! Excellent writing!
  • Another Great DeMille Book

I liked the tone this one had compared to the last few. I think the inclusion of Alex DeMille breathed fresh life into an already great authors repertoire.
  • Fantastic

Great as usual, like the new characters.

Nice effort. Somewhat abrupt and unsatisfying ending. The book might have been a hundred or so pages too long.

Another great Nelson DeMille book! New characters but fresh setting in Venezuela. Great plotting and after a slow start the story really takes off.

Terrible book. Nothing happened until the last pages. So boring
  • Shallow characters, unfulfilling conclusion

Great story and fantastic plot but it really lacked depth. And the climax comes to a logical yet totally unrewarding, unconsumated conclusion leaving the reader staring in bewildered awe at the words THE END. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? I had amazing expectations for this work and was left depressingly disappointed. Good book which could have been much better. Seek a new editor Mssrs DeMille.
  • DeMille Does It Again

Another can’t put down book by DeMille. He blends current events and very possible future events together in a fast paced thriller.
  • A Tortuous Road Trip

    By Berkeley Brent
I had a friend in college named Jeff who was convinced he was the funniest fellow in the entire school; he could not have been more delusional. This book is like taking a road trip across country with Jeff. You will be looking for the first Greyhound bus stop before you leave California.
